Temporary status, planned around what comes next.

Temporary residence covers visiting, studying and working in Canada. Each file must make sense on its own terms, even when a longer-term plan sits behind it.

Study

We support institutional admission strategy, first study permits, extensions and changes to conditions, and reapplications after refusal. Because the academic and immigration assessments are separate, we plan both together and make sure the file tells one coherent story.

Work

Depending on the position and the worker, a Canadian work permit may be employer-specific or open, LMIA-based or LMIA-exempt, and may fall under an international agreement such as CUSMA, CETA or GATS where eligibility exists. We advise on the appropriate route, and we assist with extensions, changes of employer, changes in conditions and questions about restoration of status.

Visit and family time

Visitor visas, visitor records and the Super Visa for parents and grandparents support family reunification without an immediate move to permanent residence. Each has different eligibility, evidence and timing considerations, and each should be planned around your intended stay.

Status and timing

Temporary residence is time-limited. Expiry dates, maintained status where applicable, restoration windows and the interaction between visas and status all matter. Travel plans, applications in progress and any prior refusals should be reviewed against the current record before making decisions.

A temporary application should not undermine a permanent goal. We check that the story submitted today is consistent with the plan you may act on later.
Common questions

A few things clients often ask.

What is the difference between a visitor visa and a visitor record?

A visitor visa (TRV) is a travel document placed in a passport that allows a person from a visa-required country to travel to a Canadian port of entry. A visitor record is issued inside Canada and confirms authorized visitor status and its expiry. One controls travel to Canada, the other controls status while in Canada.

Does a study permit guarantee admission, or does admission guarantee a study permit?

Neither on its own is enough. A designated learning institution decides admission based on academic criteria. IRCC decides the study permit based on immigration criteria, including funds, ties, intent and program suitability. Both assessments must succeed, and they consider different things.

Why is status expiry different from visa expiry?

A visa can allow travel to Canada until its expiry date, but the period of authorized stay is set separately, usually by a permit or by a stamp at the port of entry. It is common to hold a valid visa while status has already expired, or the reverse. Confirm both before booking travel or planning a next step.
