Temporary Residence

Post-Graduation Work Permit.

The PGWP is one of the most important bridges from study to Canadian work experience and permanent residence. Program eligibility, field-of-study rules and application timing have all tightened. Careful eligibility review before applying is essential.

Who this is for

International students who have completed an eligible program of study at a designated learning institution in Canada.

Decision factors

  • Eligibility of the specific DLI and program
  • Field-of-study alignment for programs where it is required
  • Program length and permitted permit length
  • Application timing after program completion
  • Prior PGWP history

Evidence commonly needed

  • Final transcript and letter of program completion
  • Study permit history and any authorized breaks
  • Passport with sufficient validity
  • Evidence of continuous full-time status where required

Process

  1. Eligibility assessment before applying
  2. Application preparation with correct documentation
  3. Response to further document requests
  4. Where applicable, planning next-step PR through Express Entry or a provincial stream

Risks and honest limits

PGWP is a one-time benefit for most graduates. Applying while ineligible or missing the application window can foreclose the pathway. Field-of-study rules do not apply to every graduate, but where they do, program alignment is decisive.

How an RCIC helps

We assess eligibility against current rules before you apply, and plan the transition to PR while the PGWP is still valid.

Current status. Field-of-study requirements for certain college programs are in effect and the eligible field list is updated periodically. Confirm your program is on the current list before applying.

Common questions

A few things clients often ask.

How long must I apply after graduation?

The application window follows current IRCC rules and depends on your status in Canada. Always check the current window before letting your study permit expire.

Do field-of-study rules apply to me?

Field-of-study rules apply to certain college-level programs. University degree graduates are generally not subject to them. Rules have changed and continue to evolve, so a rules check is essential before applying.

Can I apply for a second PGWP?

In most cases no. Limited exceptions exist. We review this carefully.
