Awal Takkar, MSc, LIA, RCIC
President
RCIC (R531017) · LIA (New Zealand) · Commissioner for Taking Affidavits, BC
Awal is the President of Sunrise and one of the few advisers in the world licensed to represent clients under both Canadian and New Zealand immigration law. As an immigrant herself, she understands how much emotion sits beneath every application, and she works closely with clients to reach the best possible outcome.
Education and executive experience
She holds an undergraduate degree in civil engineering from Thapar University in India and a Master's in Management for Business Excellence from the University of Warwick in the UK. She studied immigration laws, policies, and procedures at the University of British Columbia and completed a Graduate Diploma in New Zealand Immigration Advice at Toi Ohomai. Earlier in her career she held senior roles including Director of a hospitality group and Vice President of an immigration consulting group.
Areas of practice
Under Canadian immigration, her core areas of practice include permanent residency, citizenship, temporary resident visas, restoration, study permits, LMIA and LMIA-exempt work permits, procedural fairness letter (PFL) responses, ESDC representations, and provincial nominee applications.
Systems and client service
Her engineering and business background shapes how the firm works. She continually streamlines and optimizes internal processes, always with client success at the centre, which gives the whole team an edge.
Additional licensing
She is also licensed by the Province of Saskatchewan under its Foreign Worker and Recruitment Services Act to provide consulting services to foreign nationals coming into Saskatchewan.
Away from work
Away from work, she is an open water scuba diver, and just as likely to be found building something ambitious with her hands, most recently an elaborate race car track for her nine-year-old son.
Languages
Awal speaks English, Punjabi, and Hindi, and understands Urdu.
